Michelle’s jewellery has caught my eye on many an occasion before.
I love her eclectic collection – whimsical and truly beautiful. If I wasn’t a jewellery designer myself, I’d be buying Michelles!!
Michelle agreed to go under the Spotlight…
NAME: Michelle Lorimer
HOMETOWN: Avalon, NSW
1) Tell us a little bit about yourself…
Gosh, where to start… well I was an airforce kid, we moved around all the time. I got to see and do things at a young age that have built a wealth of memories for me. I studied Industrial Design at University, which I loved! Lots of drawing and model-making in the workshop. And very few essays or exams. I moved to Sydney, where I have been since in various design jobs. Two and a half years ago I had Joe, so now I am a mum, working part-time, and letting my creative side run riot while he sleeps!
2) What time of day are you at your creative best?
I do lots of sketching on the bus to work, and even sometimes at work – oops! I’ll be trying to concentrate and a few ideas will need to be jotted down so I can get on with other things. My designs come together after Joe has gone to bed, I am always going to bed too late!
3) Where do you find your inspiration? Do you have any ‘rituals’ to help put you in the creative state-of-mind?
People watching. That’s a big one. I like to imagine what jewellery would have looked great with that outfit, or with that haircut, or what would suit, or reflect the style of that person. And my materials. I love my supplies. Just by seeing a particular piece it will suggest so many ideas, I love browsing Etsy for supplies! I don’t have a ‘ritual’ for getting creative, but I do like to ‘clear the decks’ and have my workspace clutter free, something light and funny on the tv to keep me company, and a drink at hand to get down to the business of making things.
4) How do you squeeze crafting into your busy life?
This can be so hard can’t it! Well my toddler still has afternoon naps, so the four days I am home, that’s when I can photograph and promote, and in the evenings is when I get to work. This is facilitated by the fact that my partner works nights, so I’m not distracted by his company!
5) What are you working on now?
Right now I am working at building up the stock in my Etsy shop, in anticipation of a jewellery party at my son’s playgroup. And also working on bracelet and necklace ideas to complement some of my earrngs.
6) What three tools could you not live without?
My jewellery pliers, photoshop and my camera!
Thank you so much for inviting me to be a part of this fantastic series!
