Swearing is semi-taboo in our house.

Sure, every now and again one slips (picture dropping a piece of firewood on your toe…!), but otherwise that sort of language is just not allowed.  And as I get older (and maybe working amongst potty-mouthed teens is adding to it) I’m finding that I’m becoming more offended by swearing.

The crass over-use of swear words (and yes I’m going to type them) where someone who offends you is “a fucking cunt”, when girls (who are friends?!) refer to one another as “bitch” or when someone who is mouthing off is told to “shut the fuck up”…  You see where I’m going with this?

Makes me wonder if our kids are being de-sensitized to such language by what they watch on television and movies, and/or the computer games they play?  Or do their parents speak like this at home?  I don’t remember being such a potty-mouth when I was a teenager…  And I would never. ever. have told an older person to “go fuck yourself”.  EVER.

So we’ve introduced a number of words and sayings in our house, that take the place of swear words.  Words that (we hope) don’t offend as much as proper cussing (I’ve included some history on the origins of our substituted swear words where possible).

1. Son of a motherless goat – instead of SOB. (The insult son of a bitch is recorded as a direct phrase in 1707[1], and was abbreviated to SOB in 1918.)
2. Poo or shite (the origin of the word shit is pretty interesting – believed to have been used in written works as early as the 14th century[2], a popular urban myth is that it came about from the acronym ‘Ship High In Transit’, which is apparently a load of poo[3])
3. Ecelfeckan (our substitute for the f-word and a word borrowed from the name of a quiet little village in Scotland[4].  It was an episode of Jamie’s Something where he travels around in a blue combie and cooks.  Well, he was in Ecclefechan and after a Saturday evening wine or 3, it struck a funny bone.  My sincerest apologies to the people of Ecclefechan for the misuse of your town name.)

Okay, I know Valentines and Mothers Day have been and gone, but really… who can go past heart cards?

When I stumbled across this diy from Alisa Burke, I wasn’t really thinking love so much as the wonderful mandala-like quality to the blue and green beauty pictured above.

Happy Mothers Day to all you mums!

I’ve been duly spoiled today…  have you?

A cooked breakfast (which I didn’t have to clean up!).  A speedlite flash for my camera (from Husband).  And the kids pooled their money to buy me an Angel to add to my (growing) collection.
But I think the highlight of my day – apart from it being a lazy and relaxed one with the family – were the crepes with chocolate cream that we had for dinner.

Broke all the rules tonight and simply had dessert for dinner.

Hoping your Mothers Day was filled with love, laughter and lots of chocolate too

12 May 2012 – Time

It was 6:01 PM before I even managed to turn my computer ON today… talk about a busy one!

Up, breakfast.  Out to watch Little Man’s soccer team play (they won, but the Little Man didn’t play.  He come a gutser at school on Wednesday and busted up his shin.  Bruised shin, shin pads and soccer balls are not a good combination in my opinion!)  Home.  Groceries.  Home again.  Lunch.  Domestic duties.  Baking.  Emergency, panicked phone call from friend.  Massage (aaaahhhhh).  Around to before-mentioned friends house to help out with computer issues.  Home again and turn on computer while Husband and Beautiful Girl start dinner.

Needless to say, the computer’s going off again as soon as I get this post live.

I’ve been having some very interesting conversations in the staff common room at lunch lately.

Everyone marvels (and sometimes gags) at the foods I bring in for my lunch… which seems odd to me, because I don’t think I eat anything that strange.
After discussions about food,why I choose not to eat meat and how easy it is to do, I’ve been directing them to the Veggie Mama.

Stacey became a vegetarian at 26, makes “veggie dishes be so awesome nobody misses the meat” and is not sad to have “cut out an entire food group in my culinary adventures”.

A woman after my own heart, I’ve been perusing her recipes of late (current favourite – Roast Pumpkin and Haloumi Salad) and decided to inspire you today too.

With yumminess like Lemon Coconut Slice, Vegetarian Shepards Pie and Baby Beet & Feta Salad, there’s bound to be something to tickle your taste buds.

And like I’ve been telling everyone at school – going meat free is not going to turn you in to a crystal loving hippy.  In all seriousness, with just one meat free night a week you’ll be saving money, reducing your environmental impact and living a healthier life.
