Each day I receive a “Daily Dose” of INSPIRATION.
I thought Friday 25th January’s quote was quite applicable to small business owners. Here it is below –
“I’m convinced that deep down everyone knows their vision, but they have fear and guilt and no clear objective. It’s then they
convince themselves that success is beyond their reach.”
~Dr. John F. Demartini – Author, Breakthrough Experience
Dr. Demartini believes that people fear five main things:
1. They don’t know enough;
2. They don’t have enough skills to succeed;
3. They will lose their family because they will spend too much time in their businesses;
4. They are afraid of social rejection;
5. They have guilt that they won’t be able to finish what they start.
So – what has stopped you from achieving the success you dream about?
And which of these fears are you willing to let go of now?
As a self-taught jewellery designer, I’ve made it my business to ‘know enough’. I read books, magazines, other jewellery artists blogs. I learn new techniques – through practise, & trial & error – & then I perfect those techniques. I’m constantly researching marketing strategies & the latest colour trends. Looking to see what is hot on the catwalk.
It’s not enough to just have the skills though. You need to have the will & determination to succeed. You need to have the guts to get the glory.
It was a conscious decision made with my husband, that I would be MUM. I gave up my career as a high-school teacher (although admittedly by this point I was getting very jaded with teaching), & focused on FAMILY. I once had a fellow teacher tell me (when I was child-less), that the next step after marriage is motherhood (for those of us blessed to be), & I scoffed at her saying “I don’t need to be a mother!” How wrong I was. Being MUM has been, & still is, the most rewarding job I have ever had.
And being the independent & self-employed artist that I am, I get to set my work hours & work around my family.
Social rejection is a tough one when you are trying to market your designs. You will more than likely get many more “No, thank you” ‘s than you will “Yes” ‘s. Keep plugging along though. The old saying “What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.” – the rejections will help you to refine your marketing strategies. Just don’t be disheartened.
I have my fair share of UFO’s (Un-Finished Objects). For one reason or another the piece was never completed – be it that it didn’t look right, I ran out of a particular bead or it just didn’t feel right. Again, the will and determination to succeed will help you follow through. Everyone carries a certain degree of guilt. Don’t let it consume you though – it’s not healthy.
So, what do you think?
Is there something holding you back?
A fear that is stopping you from succeeding at your business, or just life in general?
Confront your fears & set them free – it will only get better from here.
