so, life got away from me….

Taking stock is a month late. In between appointments with the Boy and getting the Girl moved into her new place, the truth is that I simply forgot all about it (even though I have a blog post calendar and ‘taking stock’ was clearly marked for last month!).

When I realized, I pushed it back on the calendar, because I really do enjoy these posts.  They’re a chance for me to look forward and back at what has been happening.  A chance to catch my breath, remember to eat the elephant one bite at a time and know that regardless of how much life gets away, I’ve still got a damn good one, and for that I am thankful.

So, a month late.  Here it is – taking stock #14.

Making: raspberry jelly.  Jelly has been my evening sweet treat lately – and yes, it’s the Aeroplane variety
Cooking: cooking….. arrrrgghhhhhh.  I. Am. So. Over. Having. To. Decide. What. Is. For. Dinner!
Drinking: water, water, and more water
Reading: Smith Journal.  I’ve started picking it up for my Boy because he enjoys the articles, and anything that can get a boy reading is worth buying
Wanting: another weekend on the coast with my Girl
Looking: for….
Playing: the iPod in the dock – music ranging from jazz and the 70’s through to gangster rap and electronic dance
Deciding: that enough is enough
Wishing: I lived closer to my nephews…. seeing video of their hijinks is great, but I’d love to be there in person
Enjoying: the quiet
Waiting: for our next appointment with our new functional medicine GP.  It’s so exciting to have found a medical professional who wants to help and heal you, rather than push pills or tell you it’s all in your head
Liking: that we still are having cooler nights
Wondering: if the weather will ever warm up though!
Loving: that my Girl has settled into her new life in her new town
Pondering: what next year will bring
Considering: the options
WatchingThe Vampire Dairies with my Boy.  Just about finished Season 1.  It’s fun sharing these shows with my kids now that they are old enough
Hoping: for a treatment plan that will halt the progress of my Boy’s disease
Marveling: at how the mind of our new GP works – you could see the cogs turning as she talked to us
Needing: a decent night sleep
Smelling: the raspberry jelly I just made!
Wearing: socks over feet rubbed with Happy Feet cream (it’s a mixture I make myself, and it makes my feet happy)
Following: the news
Noticing: how if I plan my top 3 priority tasks for the day, I seem to get a lot more done
Knowing: that there is always tomorrow to do more
Thinking: about how I haven’t dusted for a few weeks now.  Or ironed.  And how it’s bothering me but it’s not
Feeling: tired a lot
Admiring: the strength of women… mums in particular
Sorting: through stuff in cupboards…. still….
Buying: or bought. A new bed for the ‘spare’ room (feels so weird saying that!)
Getting: ready for after school pickup
Bookmarking: Dear Mama.  A photographic appreciation of motherhood.  Well worth a look for all mums.
Disliking: how this time of year gets so busy
Opening: a can of worms
Giggling: I told you last time… I don’t giggle
Snacking: on crystallized ginger
Coveting: the definition of covet is ‘yearn to possess’ and I really don’t covet anything… I have all I really want or need
Wishing: that it was next weekend already… my Girl is home for a few days
Hearing: the wind in the trees through the open back door

find a moment for yourself today

the last couple of months has been tough…

If I put it into perspective…  at least I don’t live in Syria…  it’s nothing I can’t manage.  Health issues on many fronts, stretching myself too thin and, once again, not listening to my body has meant the time has come where something had to give.

Our bodies don’t coming with warning lights to let us know that something is about to break. But they do give us signals when they are running low.  And running on empty seems to be a modern epidemic.  Meet a friend down the street and ask them how they’ve been, and I’ll bet that part of their answer is “busy”.

Life is busy.  There’s no denying that.  We’re all plugged in, with time flying by. Places to be. People to see. Things to do. Not enough time.

And then we stress about our lack of time.

How often, though, do you schedule time to yourself?  Time to unplug.  Decompress. Take a break.

no distractions, no people, no guilt, nothing but yourself and your thoughts

Solitude is a beautiful thing and can work wonders when you let it. It’s when you neglect that need for time alone that things come unstuck.

Stop forsaking solitude to keep up with the demands of life. Carve out moments, a brief as they may be. Because once you realise that time to yourself is as real a need as food or sleep, the rewards will be worth it.

So where will you find a moment for yourself today – a moment to feel. to think. to sit – and what will you do with it?

9 simple ways to just do as much as you can

Life can be complicated. We’re all busy.  Too much to do, too little time to do it. Work. Family. Business. Friends. Commitments. Life. Too many demands on your time and all with conflicting agendas.

Sound familiar?

It was while reading the latest edition of Flow that I came across the phrase ‘just do as much as you can.

I read that phrase and there was a lightbulb moment for me. A sense of joy to know that others were embracing the do-less-go-slow concept. That I’m not alone and not lazy. And the realisation that I wanted to commit to this concept for the next 12 months.

If I’m honest with myself, I’ve been doing this for the last 12 months already. The last 3 months out of necessity, not choice, as my health and energy levels plummeted to all-time lows.

Letting others do for me, and not insisting on doing everything myself. Giving my inner perfectionist permission to leave the mess. Not spending my every waking hour in helper mode. Delegating more at home and freeing up my time for things I love and excel at.  Just doing as much as I can.

it’s time to slow down

I can hear you all inwardly screaming “But how do I do that?  I’ve got too much to do and not enough time to do it!”

Here are 11 ways to get you started:

Make a conscious decision to do less. Focus on what is important, what needs to be done and let the rest go. It might take some practice but keep at it.

Find pleasure in what you are doing when you are doing it. Chose one task to do mindfully today, like, folding the washing. It’s fresh from the line, crisp and clean, and most importantly, now folded.

Disconnect from your technology.  The constant interruptions of messages and calls, and being at the mercy and demands of others. There are benefits to being unreachable.

Be present when you are with others. Without close contact with other people, we grow into cold, lonely beings. Make time every single day to spend with loved ones. Listen. Share stories. Share moments. And you won’t end up with a single death-bed regret.

Learn to say “no”. Alexandra Franzen has even written a 5 step script to saying the perfect ‘no’ if you’re stuck on how to do it graciously.

Eat slower. Savour the flavours, the texture, the taste. And take the time to eat proper food at a sit-down dinner with your family.  Ask about their day and talk about yours. It’s important.

Drive slower. Notice the sights when you drive. Wave to passers-by. Allow yourself to enjoy your inner Miss Daisy.

Stop multi-tasking. Focus on just one task. If you find yourself tempted to wander, stop, breathe and come back mentally to what you are doing.

Take a moment to breathe. There will be moments when the stress and overwhelm will hit.  This is when you stop and take a moment to breathe. And if you need to, take another breath. Continue breathing until the feeling has passed.

and just do as much as you can

2017 is my year to embrace the simplicity, to find time to unwind and to slow down the pace of life.

It seems that these posts come most when I need to stop and smell the roses.

I was telling a girlfriend today that…

…someone pressed fast forward on my life, and I can’t find the stop button

I’ve been having moments lately when it seems that life is going to overwhelm me.  So I stop, sit in the sun and take 10 minutes to remind myself that I can do this.

Making: beautiful photos to go with the amazing stories of the residents at our local retirement home (a little sneak peek above…)
Cooking: meals in the slow cooker – it’s an afternoon sanity saver
Drinking: lots of water… still
Reading: A Beautiful Anarchy by David Duchemin – a book about the human longing to create
Wanting: to get it all done!
Looking: at places to visit in Morocco
Playing: with logos in Photoshop Elements
Deciding: that life is too short not to travel
Wishing: for that weekend away… still
Enjoying: the colder nights and the warmth of our fire
Waiting: and waiting and waiting and waiting
Liking: my new Moment camera case
Wondering: …
Loving: having my Girl home!
Pondering: lots of things
Considering: all the options
Watching: nothing at the moment… all of my favourite t.v. shows have finished
Hoping: that my passport arrives before Daughter leaves
Marvelling: …
Needing: the kids to turn down the stereo… does this mean I’m getting old?
Smelling: newly turned soil from my freshly planted winter veg
Wearing: socks and slippers – not attractive, but I have warm feet!
Following: world events and wondering what the blue blazes is going on
Noticing: that my eyesight is getting worse, quick
Knowing: that I’m just going to have to remember to have my glasses with me more often
Thinking: that it’s nice to have the bed to myself for a couple of nights
Feeling: just a tad overwhelmed at the moment – have I bitten off more than I can chew?
Admiring: grit and determination
Sorting: through fonts I’ve loaded on my computer… I had to print them out so I could remember what I’d installed…
Buying: too many things online
Getting: up early for my morning yoga session and loving it
Bookmarking: recipes in my essential oils books
Disliking: insincerity
Opening: mail
Giggling: at the dog every time she groans when she gets up – sucks to get old
Snacking: on tamari almonds – yum
Coveting: that 24-70 lens still…
Wishing: that every now and again the Boy would stop talking… just for a few minutes
Helping: my Girl prep for her tutoring sessions – helps to have a Mother who was a teacher
Hearing: the dog snoring
