chiaroscuro
noun
1. the treatment of light and shade in drawing and painting.
2. an effect of contrasted light and shadow.

have you read the tale of despereaux?

There’s a character named Chiaroscuro – he’s a rat and he was destined to follow the light.

Light and dark in photography has nothing to do with rats, but everything to do with how the strong contrasts between light and dark are used to add depth to a photo.  It’s an artistic concept has been around since the days of Caravaggio, although I can’t find who were the early adopters of this technique in the photography world.

If you’re like me and love black-and-white photography, then you’re going to have a ball with this weekend’s prompt.
