A global trend for “slow fashion” is on the rise, focusing on designs that will stay in fashion over several seasons and high-quality fabrics that are made to last. ~Sydney Morning Herald – Life and Style – May 14, 2009
To me “slow fashion” makes sense.
Having never really been one for the ‘fast, cheap and seasonal’ fashion, I’ve always preferred to buy quality pieces that will last me over several seasons. Investing in the quality materials and craftsmanship equals investing in your own wardrobe.
Two factors contributing to this new trend are:
The global economic crisis (a good thing to come from it!); and
A desire by consumers for sustainable, guilt-free fashions (shun the sweat shops!).
It also seems to me another really good reason to support handmade. Quite often, the heart and soul of the artist goes in to creating the design. Be it jewellery, clothing, shoes, make-up, quality and dedication are a part of handmade.
So, what are your thoughts? Is it time to become a slow fashionista?
