Today’s Aussie on Etsy is Gai of Rhasdala.
Gai’s business ideal of “I love to help women feel as beautiful as they are” really hits a note with me.
Not only am I a fan of natural beauty products, but I’m also a big believer (and advocate) for feeling comfortable in the body you are blessed with.
Some come and have a wander through this treasure trove of natural goodness….

1) Tell us a little bit about yourself…
Umm, Ok…well first I am a mum to 4 kids; two girls aged 17 & 15, and two boys, 6 & 2. I am lucky enough to have married a true gentleman with the patience of a saint and I love being his wife.
At 10 I was painting in oils, at 13 I was designing evening and bridal wear, at 22 I won my first award for fashion design. Design eventually took a back seat to family commitments and I only played with creating sporadically until I found soap making a few years ago. Through researching ingredients for soap I found other products to try my hand at, and now the problem is remembering that I can’t make everything today!
2) What time of day are you at your creative best?
Like most mums, I am calmest when the kids are in bed for the night, that’s when my brain is flooded with ideas that MUST be seen through to fruition. I am also lucky enough to have one day a week that I can be on my own to do all the creating I want(for a few hours at least).
3) Where do you find your inspiration? Do you have any ‘rituals’ to help put you in the creative state-of-mind?
Peace and quiet is a rare commodity in our house, so on my ‘me’ day, I come home and leave the house silent. I have a cup of tea while I get all my ingredients together and then I lose myself in oils, fragrances, exfoliants, botanicals, colourants, extracts, butters…
I’m a very practical person and that carries through to my products. I’m not after just a pretty scent or something that feels nice, it has to do something for your skin. I guess you could say that my inspiration comes from a continual discovery of just how useful and talented nature is. I believe that natural skin care can be just as effective as high end, chemical laden, cosmetics – my aim is to make natural products that give REAL results.
4) How do you squeeze crafting into your busy life?
Most of my products are made fresh when an order comes in, which means I might be making ‘stuff’ while my 2yo plays in the other room, at night after the kids are in bed, or on the weekend while my husband makes sure I am not disturbed. On my kid free day I make my more time consuming things like soap, bath bombs, or body butters.
5) What are you working on now?
I have been developing a natural hair care range for over a year now. I’m really close to having it ready for trialling and I’m SO excited about it!
6) What three tools could you not live without?
#My stick blender – I don’t know how people made soap before stick blenders, they must have had arms like a body builder!
#Great digital scales – Essential in making soap and cosmetics, you have to be so precise.
#My computer – Making the product is often the final step in a long process of research, more research, and developing the right formula.
Thanks so much for sharing a bit about yourself with us Gai! I do take my hat off to you – running a business with a busy family.
