Mad for Millinery

The Melbourne Cup is only days away, & Australian milliners are working well in to the night to finish orders for the big day.

I definitely don’t claim to be a milliner – although it is on my ‘to-do’ list, learn millinery.  I think of myself more as a ‘hat finisher’.  I purchase the base & finish it with an assortment of feathers, flowers, sinamay & ribbon.

Shabby Chic is one of the hats I’ve finished for the Spring Racing Carnival.  It is a small brim, black straw base with 2 divine flowers as the feature at the front.

At the side I’ve threaded wire through gold/black ribbon to create a sculptural interest, & added a couple of glossy feathers.

As with my jewellery designs, each hat I finish is a one-of-a-kind design, as I don’t purchase enough materials to do it twice.

If you are interested in the Shabby Chic hat, it is available for purchase.  Please click on the link to my eCrater Store or alternatively contact me through comments.

      Hi Camille,
I’ve found my supplies in many places… Everywhere from discount stores to haberdashery shops.
Also look online under ‘millinery supplies’ and ‘feathers’.
Look for feathers, flowers, ribbons, buttons. Invest in a good glue gun and some strong, but fine nylon thread.
It’s a lot of fun finishing hats. I hope you have fun exploring this new craft.
