{shop Australian handmade} Stalley

{Images from Stalley on Made It}

After our trip to Tasmania this Summer I was delighted to come across Stalley– a handmade designer from Launceston (which is my Sis’ current hometown and the one place in Tassie where we spent the most time!)

Up-cycled, original and earth-friendly, their Made It studio houses the cutest little coin purses and some delightfully Aussie-themed linen.

Quite partial to the Tasmanian Tiger tea-towel myself…

Magnifique Monday

I love to window shop. Especially for those ‘big ticket’ items… you know, the ones that you have to save your pennies for. Magnifique Monday’s are devoted to such… handmade finds we may not be able to afford right now, but maybe some day…

ET TU the VALET

“one of a handmade series reinterpreting the valet stand from western cultural traditions.inspiration of form is from the Aboriginal ‘boomerang’ and the carved Maori ‘hei-matau’ or kiwi fish-hook motifs, seen in its shadow. titled “Et Tu”, being Maori for “stand up”, as a comic relief pun constructed from a 3d calligraphic tag that can bring you order + clarity to sorting the day’s clothes.

From mpathe (on Made It) –  the studio of simon alexander cook practicising as a multimedia artist and designer.

currently producing timber furniture, sculpture with ecological habitat interests and public artwork installations in sydney simon has worked with leading architects and designers, has exhibited in melbourne, sydney, adelaide and germany, and has work in public and private collections.”

To me it has a skeletal, dinosaur quality.  Rearing on its hind legs and daring you to get near… I love it!

Aussies on Etsy – Miss Isa

Today I featured the talented Rachel of Miss Isa – whose Etsy shop is chock-full of gorgeous stationery, made from recycled and repurposed papers.

As a stationery-nut myself, I had quite a wonderful time wandering through Rachel’s shop.  Not only does Rachel create pencils, but she also stocks garlands, notebooks, embellishments and envelopes as well.

She has shared a bit about herself with us here today…

NAME: Rachel
AGE: 27
HOMETOWN: Ballarat

1) Tell us a little bit about yourself…

I love winter. In fact, my whole family does. We like to snuggle, bake, sew, study, and tease each other to near madness. Hehe. I homeschool my two children, which keeps me crazily busy and when the school day is done, I head off to my study and work on pencils. I’ve had an obsession with stationery since I was a teenager and it always bugged me that pencils were so boring and the cool ones that I could find were so expensive. I’m very pleased to be able to offer the most reasonably priced unique pencils I’ve ever seen in Australia.

2) What time of day are you at your creative best?

Mid to late afternoon. When school and the house work are done and I can clear my head and work.

3) Where do you find your inspiration? Do you have any ‘rituals’ to help put you in the creative state-of-mind?

I do have rituals. I cut everything the night before I put it all together never on the same day. I always have Hamish and Andy on my laptop playing to make me laugh while I’m working. Goodness knows what I’ll do if they stop podcasting. I’ll only have the Daily Show and the Colbert Report left! Hehe.

I get a lot of inspiration from my children. They are fascinated by both the running of the business and the creative side. My Husband is amazing. I think he’s constantly thinking of ideas. He’s wonderful. DUST (Down Under Street Team) is a group of the most amazing and inspiring women I’ve ever met! They’re so generous with their knowledge and I wouldn’t be were I am now without them.

4) How do you squeeze crafting into your busy life?

Good question. Um, I wake up and I run. Then I go to sleep.

5) What are you working on now?

I’m working on wholesale orders for some more stockists around Australia. I’m so excited to find that businesses are appreciative of the reasonable price of my pencils and that they’re selling very well. Phew!

6) What three tools could you not live without?

Good quality paintbrushes, the best sharpeners I can find and my netbook.

Thanks for letting us get to know you Rachel!
